Billie’s Besties was created in honour of our daughter, Billie, who we sadly lost at just 10 days old. Her life — though heartbreakingly short — showed us the power of love, care, and community.

Every moment matters — especially in the first hours of a newborn’s life.
In 2026, Billie’s Besties is on a mission to raise $200,000 to fund lifesaving NICU equipment, including a new therapeutic cooling system that gives critically ill newborns the best possible chance of survival and recovery.
This goal will be powered by a year of heartfelt community fundraising — including events, partnerships, merchandise, and major challenges like running the New York City Marathon in honour of Billie and babies like her.
Why it matters:
One of the most critical conditions treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) — a serious brain injury caused by lack of oxygen during birth.
Thanks to advances in neonatal care, there is a powerful treatment available: therapeutic cooling. This therapy gently lowers a baby’s body temperature to around 33.5°C for 72 hours, helping protect the brain, reduce inflammation, and limit cell death. But timing is critical — treatment must begin within six hours of birth.
Access to therapeutic cooling equipment in the NICU is not just helpful — it is lifesaving. These devices allow clinical teams to act immediately and precisely during the most critical window of care.
For babies born at or beyond 35 weeks showing signs of moderate to severe brain injury, therapeutic cooling can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the risk of lifelong disabilities, including cerebral palsy and developmental delays.
